Young Man Caught Hiding in Bank Ceiling After Failed Overnight Robbery Attempt
A suspected thief, Idam Jeremiah, has been arrested in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, after hiding inside the ceiling of a bank in a foiled attempt to carry out an overnight robbery.
The incident occurred at a branch of Guaranty Trust Bank in the state capital. According to reports, the suspect allegedly entered the bank premises pretending to be a customer. He later locked himself in the toilet, climbed into the ceiling, and remained hidden until after the close of business, hoping to execute his plan under the cover of darkness.
However, things did not go as planned. A cleaner who resumed duties the following morning reportedly noticed the man’s slippers left outside the toilet. On closer inspection, she saw smudges on the wall and became suspicious. She raised an alarm and alerted the bank’s internal security.
Security personnel quickly moved into action. One of the guards climbed into the ceiling and discovered the suspect curled up in hiding. After several warnings, he was persuaded to come down peacefully when he was told that the police had been contacted.
The spokesperson for the Kebbi State Police Command, DSP Nafiu Abubakar, confirmed the arrest. He stated that the suspect is currently in custody and that the Criminal Investigation Department has commenced further investigation into the matter.
The incident has sparked concerns about security within banking premises, particularly in non-customer areas such as restrooms. Security experts advise banks to carry out regular inspections of their buildings, including less obvious areas such as ceilings and maintenance shafts.
Idam Jeremiah now faces prosecution, as authorities look deeper into his motives and whether he acted alone or as part of a wider network.
