Unilorin Appoints JAMB Registrar Oloyede, Two Others as Emeritus Professors

The University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) has bestowed the prestigious title of Emeritus Professor on three of its distinguished retirees, including Prof. Is’haq Oloyede, the current Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). The other two recipients are Prof. Olu Obafemi, a renowned scholar in English and dramatic literature, and Prof. Musbau Akanji, a notable figure in biochemistry. The announcement was made following the university’s Senate meeting on Thursday, January 23, 2025.

Prof. Is’haq Oloyede, who retired from UNILORIN in October 2024, has a storied career both in academia and public service. Before his appointment as JAMB Registrar, Oloyede served as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, where his tenure was marked by significant academic and administrative advancements. His contributions to education reform, particularly through his role at JAMB, have been lauded for improving the transparency and efficiency of Nigeria’s tertiary admission process.

Prof. Olu Obafemi, another honoree, is celebrated for his extensive contributions to literature and academia. Having retired in 2020, Obafemi’s work in English and Dramatic Literature has left a lasting impact on the study and appreciation of these subjects both within Nigeria and abroad.

The third recipient, Prof. Musbau Akanji, is recognized for his pioneering work in biochemistry. His academic journey includes serving as the Vice-Chancellor of two universities, Al-Hikmah University and Federal University of Technology, Minna. His research and contributions to the field have been significant in advancing knowledge in Biochemistry.

The conferment of the Emeritus Professor title is a rare honor, given to retired academics who have demonstrated exceptional service and contributions to their fields and the university community. It is a testament to the enduring impact these scholars have had on academia and their respective disciplines.

Mr. Kunle Akogun, UNILORIN’s Director of Corporate Affairs, confirmed the appointments in a statement, reflecting the university’s commitment to recognizing its distinguished alumni and faculty. This move not only honors the individuals but also serves as an inspiration to current and future academics.
