UK Implements Stricter Visa Requirements for 2025

The United Kingdom has announced significant changes to its visa policies, effective January 2025, impacting international students, skilled workers, and family visa applicants. These adjustments aim to align visa requirements with the current economic climate and cost of living.

For international students, the financial requirements have increased. Applicants must now demonstrate they have £1,483 per month for living expenses in London and £1,136 per month outside London. This marks an increase from the previous requirements of £1,334 and £1,023, respectively. Additionally, students must show proof of these funds held for at least 28 consecutive days before applying.

Skilled worker visa applicants face a new minimum salary threshold of £38,700 annually, up from £26,500. This change aims to ensure that incoming workers can support themselves without relying on public funds. Employers are also prohibited from passing sponsorship costs onto workers, and a loophole allowing applicants to contribute towards their own salary by investing in their sponsor’s business has been closed.

Family visa applicants must now meet a higher income threshold, with the minimum income for sponsoring a spouse or dependent rising from £18,600 to £29,000. This figure is expected to increase to £38,700 by 2026. Tourist visa applicants are also required to show stronger proof of funds, typically between £1,500 and £2,500 per visit.

These changes reflect the UK government’s efforts to manage immigration effectively and ensure that visa applicants are financially prepared for life in the UK.
