Tems Clinches Second Grammy, Wins Best African Music Performance Award

Nigerian singer and songwriter Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has won her second Grammy Award, securing the Best African Music Performance category at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards for her hit song Love Me Jeje.

The category, introduced in 2024, recognizes exceptional talent from the African continent. Tems triumphed over strong competition from some of Afrobeats’ biggest names, including Burna Boy, Asake, Wizkid, and Yemi Alade, as well as Chris Brown, the only non-African nominee in the category, for his track Sensational, featuring Davido and Lojay.

Tems’ Grammy victory cements her growing influence in the global music industry, marking her as one of the most significant African artists of her generation. This is her second Grammy win, following her 2023 triumph in the Best Melodic Rap Performance category for her contribution to Future’s Wait for U, featuring Drake.

Her latest achievement is a testament to the international rise of Afrobeats, a genre that has rapidly gained mainstream recognition, with Nigerian artists dominating global charts and major award ceremonies.

The Best African Music Performance category was introduced to highlight Africa’s diverse musical styles on a prestigious global platform. By securing the award, Tems has further solidified Nigeria’s dominance in Afrobeats and demonstrated the genre’s growing impact beyond the continent.

Her win also signals an industry shift, with African artists no longer just featuring in international collaborations but leading global music conversations on their own terms.
