South African Politician Julius Malema Fires Back At Elon Musk Over Sanctions Call, Says ‘You’re Racist, You Lost Your Left Brain’

In a recent escalation of tensions, South African politician Julius Malema, leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), has vehemently responded to tech billionaire Elon Musk’s call for international sanctions against him. Musk’s appeal came after Malema led supporters in chanting the controversial anti-apartheid song “Kill the Boer” during the EFF’s 10th-anniversary rally at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg.

Musk, born in Pretoria, took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to express his concerns, stating that Malema was “openly pushing for the genocide of white people in South Africa.” He further urged for immediate sanctions and for Malema to be declared an international criminal.

In a press conference held in Johannesburg, Malema dismissed Musk’s accusations, asserting that the tech mogul lacked understanding of South Africa’s historical context. He remarked, “Why must I educate Elon Musk? He looks like an illiterate. The only thing that protects him is his white skin.” Malema emphasized that the song is a significant part of South Africa’s liberation history and should not be interpreted literally.

The chant “Kill the Boer” has been a subject of intense debate in South Africa. Originally a struggle song during the fight against apartheid, its lyrics have been viewed by some as inflammatory in the post-apartheid era. In 2022, the Equality Court ruled that the song did not constitute hate speech, a decision that remains contentious.

This incident is not the first clash between Malema and Musk. In 2023, after Malema led the same chant at a rally, Musk accused him of inciting violence against white farmers. Malema responded by questioning Musk’s understanding of South African history and culture.

The ongoing dispute highlights the complex interplay between South Africa’s historical narratives and contemporary interpretations. As the nation approaches its next general elections, such debates are expected to intensify, reflecting deeper societal divisions and the challenges of reconciling a tumultuous past with present realities.
