Seye Kehinde OON – The Visionary Who Redefined Nigerian Journalism and Championed Democracy

In a nation where the struggle for democracy and press freedom has been hard-fought, few individuals stand as tall as Seye Kehinde—renowned journalist, pioneering publisher, and now, a distinguished recipient of Nigeria’s prestigious national honour. His story is one of resilience, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to truth, making him a true Exceptional Man.

A Lifetime of Service Honoured

President Bola Tinubu recently bestowed national honours upon a select group of distinguished Nigerians—both living and posthumously—in recognition of their extraordinary contributions to the nation, particularly in the historic struggle for democracy surrounding June 12. Among these luminaries was Seye Kehinde, the visionary founder of City People Magazine, whose decades of dedication to journalism have left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s media landscape.

The honours also paid tribute to late heroes such as Kudirat Abiola (Commander of the Federal Republic), Musa Yar’Adua (Grand Commander of the Federal Republic), and Ken Saro-Wiwa (Commander of the Order of the Niger), alongside living icons including Bayo Onanuga (Commander of the Order of the Niger) and Dapo Olorunyomi (Officer of the Order of the Niger). For Kehinde, this recognition is not merely a personal accolade but a testament to the enduring power of journalism in shaping a nation’s democratic journey.

The Making of a Media Luminary

Born in Ishara, Ogun State, Seye Kehinde’s journey into journalism began with an innate passion for storytelling and a deep curiosity about the world. After earning a degree in History and Political Science from Obafemi Awolowo University, he further refined his craft with a Postgraduate Diploma in Journalism, laying the foundation for a career that would redefine Nigerian media.

His early years at Newswatch, African Concord, and The NEWS Magazine were marked by fearless reporting and an unyielding commitment to investigative journalism. However, it was in 1996 that he made his boldest move—founding City People Magazine, Nigeria’s premier soft-sell publication. Under his stewardship, the magazine became a cultural phenomenon, masterfully blending celebrity news, political commentary, and lifestyle features in a way that captivated the nation.

Sixty Years of Influence and Inspiration

In April 2025, Kehinde celebrated his sixtieth birthday in grand style, surrounded by media titans, political leaders, and entertainment icons. The event was more than a celebration—it was a testament to his enduring legacy and mentorship. Colleagues and protégés alike spoke glowingly of his humility, leadership, and unparalleled role in nurturing Nigeria’s next generation of journalists.

Even President Tinubu acknowledged Kehinde’s monumental contributions, noting that his work over three decades has fundamentally reshaped Nigerian media. From breaking ground-breaking stories to mentoring countless young reporters, Kehinde’s influence extends far beyond the glossy pages of his magazine.
