Ogun State Government Suspends Monarch for Six Months Following Assault Incident

The Ogun State Government has announced a six-month suspension of Oba Abdulsemiu Ogunjobi, the Olorile of Orile-Ifo, following a widely circulated video showing the monarch assaulting a 73-year-old man, Chief Areola Abraham.

The incident, which sparked public outrage, led to the invitation of both Oba Ogunjobi and Chief Abraham by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ganiyu Hamzat, for interrogation. Following the investigation, the government deemed the monarch’s actions as “uncivil conduct not befitting the status of an Oba.” Consequently,Oba Ogunjobi has been suspended and stripped of the paraphernalia of the stool of Olorile-Ifo pending further determination of his culpability.

The suspension was carried out in conjunction with the Egba Traditional Council, in accordance with Section 52(1) of the Obas and Chiefs’ Law of Ogun State 2021. The government emphasized that it will not condone any acts of indignity against its citizens, regardless of the perpetrator’s status.

In addition to the suspension, the Ogun State Police Command has interrogated Oba Ogunjobi regarding the incident. The Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, stated that the matter is under investigation and affirmed that justice will be served. He emphasized that no individual, regardless of their position, can claim control over the Nigeria Police Force. 

This development underscores the government’s commitment to upholding justice and maintaining the dignity of all citizens, irrespective of social standing.
