NNPC Ltd. and Partners Kickstart Five Mini LNG Plants

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) along with its partners, has officially launched the construction of five mini-Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plants in Ajaokuta, Kogi State, marking a significant step towards enhancing domestic gas utilization and supporting Nigeria’s gas revolution agenda.

The groundbreaking ceremony for these facilities, which include NNPC Prime LNG, NGML/Gasnexus LNG, BUA LNG, Highland LNG, and LNG Arete, was held on Thursday, with a combined capacity of 97 million standard cubic feet of gas per day. This initiative not only aims to provide a cleaner and cheaper source of energy to households, industries, and businesses but also aligns with the Federal Government’s vision of leveraging Nigeria’s abundant gas resources for economic development, energy security, and environmental sustainability.

Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd., emphasized the company’s commitment to the Federal Government’s gas-to-power aspirations. “Natural gas holds the key to unlocking a bright and prosperous future for Nigeria,” Kyari stated, highlighting the role of these projects in industrialization, job creation, and economic diversification.

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, assured the collaboration of the Federal Government in these ventures, underscoring the initiatives’ alignment with national goals of reducing carbon emissions and enhancing the well-being of Nigerians. He also praised the efforts of NNPC Ltd. and its partners for their dedication to this project.

Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo of Kogi State expressed his gratitude for the selection of Ajaokuta for these investments, noting the potential for job creation, investment opportunities, and a step forward in achieving energy security. Ododo described the move as a testament to the state’s commitment to embracing cleaner energy for economic prosperity.

This development is part of a broader strategy to deepen gas utilization in Nigeria, with the projects expected to catalyze economic growth by providing gas to areas outside the existing pipeline network. These mini LNG plants will facilitate the transportation of gas over long distances, offering a sustainable energy solution where traditional pipeline infrastructure is absent.

The construction of these plants represents a partnership between NNPC Ltd. and private sector entities, showcasing a model of public-private cooperation aimed at energy sufficiency, industrial support, and carbon emission reduction. NNPC Ltd. has stakes in three of the five plants, with private companies leading the development of the others, signaling a robust investment of over $500 million into Kogi State’s economy.

This groundbreaking is seen as a beacon of hope for sustainable development, promising to unlock numerous benefits for Nigeria, including job opportunities, improved infrastructure, and a cleaner energy footprint, contributing significantly to the nation’s GDP.
