Nigerian TikTok Star Sentenced to Jail for “Spraying” Naira Notes

A Nigerian social media influencer, widely known on TikTok, has been sentenced to six months in prison for “abusing” the Nigerian currency. The influencer, whose name has been withheld for legal reasons, was seen in a viral video spraying naira notes during a lavish birthday party in Lagos. According to Nigerian law, mishandling or defacing the national currency is a criminal offense punishable by fines or imprisonment.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) prosecuted the case, presenting video evidence that showed the influencer throwing naira notes into the air while surrounded by a cheering crowd. The judge ruled that this act not only violated the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) rules but also encouraged disregard for the national symbol. The sentence—six months without the option of a fine—has sparked debates across social media.

While some Nigerians agree that the punishment is necessary to uphold respect for the naira, others believe it is excessive, especially given the influencer’s status as a first-time offender. Critics argue that many politicians and elites often engage in similar acts during public ceremonies without repercussions. The influencer’s legal team has announced plans to appeal the ruling, citing unequal application of justice.

The incident has reignited calls for public awareness campaigns about currency handling and for reforms that ensure penalties are applied equally. The CBN has previously launched campaigns warning the public against spraying, folding, or writing on naira notes, insisting that such actions degrade the currency and cost the country millions in reprinting.

As the controversy unfolds, the case has become a litmus test for how seriously Nigerian authorities will enforce currency-related laws, especially in an era where social media makes such behavior instantly visible. The influencer remains in custody as their legal team prepares for an appeal hearing next month.
