NAF Makes History with Induction of First Female Trainees

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has reached a historic milestone by inducting its first group of female graduates from the Air Force Girls’ Military School (AFGMS) as Airwomen. This landmark achievement follows a major revision to the NAF’s Absorption Policy, which previously only applied to male graduates of the Air Force Military School (AFMS), known as ex-Junior Air Men.

The updated policy now opens pathways for female graduates of AFGMS, offering them the opportunity to serve as non-commissioned officers in the NAF.

In a statement on Monday, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, Director of Public Relations and Information for the Nigerian Air Force, confirmed that the AFGMS Class of 2017 successfully completed their military training at NAF Base Kaduna after a rigorous recruitment process.

“In a landmark step toward gender inclusion, the Nigerian Air Force has officially welcomed its first cohort of ex-Junior Air Women as full-fledged Airwomen,” the statement read. “This historic shift follows the expansion of the NAF’s Absorption Policy to include graduates of the Air Force Girls’ Military School, who were previously excluded.”

The newly inducted Airwomen, who graduated from AFGMS in August 2023, underwent intensive training as part of the 2024 NAF recruitment cycle. Their successful completion marks a pivotal moment in the NAF’s efforts to promote gender equality within its ranks.

The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, hailed the development as a victory for young women aspiring to serve their country.

“This is a triumph for every girl who has ever dreamed of wearing the uniform,” he said. “It reflects the NAF’s dedication to fostering inclusivity and providing equal opportunities for all.”

The induction of these record breaking women signifies a new era of progress for the Nigerian Air Force, reinforcing its commitment to diversity and excellence in service.
