Governor Assures 70 Million Gallons Daily Water Supply

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has expressed his satisfaction with the progress of the Phase II Adiyan Water Works project, confidently assuring residents that it will supply 70 million gallons of water daily upon completion. This statement was made during a detailed inspection visit to the site, highlighting the government’s commitment to solving the perennial water supply issues in Nigeria’s commercial capital.

The Adiyan Water Works, located near the boundary between Lagos and Ogun States, is a critical component of the state’s strategy to improve water access for millions of Lagosians. Governor Sanwo-Olu, alongside his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, and other state officials, including the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, toured the expansive site, observing the ongoing civil and electromechanical works.

According to recent reports, the project is approximately 80% complete, with major civil works well underway. Governor Sanwo-Olu revealed that the equipment necessary for the water treatment plant, including pumps and containers, is largely on site, with about 70 to 75% of all required equipment already present. This progress signals that the project is on track to significantly enhance the water supply capacity of Lagos, potentially serving areas like Ipaja, Ayobo, Ikotun, Isolo, and extending to parts of the Lagos metropolis.

During the visit, the governor emphasized the importance of potable water as a fundamental element of urban living, especially in a megacity like Lagos. He noted, “Water is one critical component that the government has to meet, and we are happy that Adiyan II will be living up to that responsibility.” The assurance comes at a time when water scarcity has been a significant challenge, with over 10 million Lagos residents previously reported to lack access to clean drinking water.

The initiative is part of a broader vision by the Sanwo-Olu administration to ensure sustainable water supply in Lagos, with the Adiyan project seen as a game-changer due to its scale and expected impact. The project includes laying extensive pipelines from Akute into the Ogun River, ensuring a robust water intake system.

Lagos State Water Corporation’s General Manager, Engr. Mukhtaar Tijani, also commended the state government for prioritizing this project, pledging that the contractor would meet the completion timeline. The governor has set an ambitious target for the project’s completion within the next 10 to 12 months, promising a transformation in the area’s water supply landscape.

This development has been met with optimism from residents and stakeholders, who see it as a step towards better living standards and economic growth through reliable water access. The project not only aims at increasing water supply but also at improving the socio-economic lifestyle of Lagosians by reducing dependence on water vendors and ensuring that the basic human need for clean water is met more effectively.

The assurance from Governor Sanwo-Olu comes amidst posts on X (formerly Twitter) from the official handles of the state government and the governor himself, showcasing the inspection and reinforcing the commitment to this vital project. As Lagos continues to grow, the Adiyan Water Works expansion is a testament to the government’s dedication to infrastructure development that directly impacts the quality of life for its residents.
