Finnish Ambassador Updates Tinubu on Simon Ekpa’s Trial in Abuja

President Bola Tinubu received an update on the ongoing trial of Simon Ekpa from the Finnish Ambassador to Nigeria, Ms. Sanna Selin, during a credential presentation ceremony at the State House in Abuja on Friday, January 24, 2025.

Simon Ekpa, a self-proclaimed leader of a faction of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), was arrested in Finland in November of the previous year on charges related to terrorism. His case has been a point of discussion between Nigeria and Finland due to the implications for bilateral relations and security cooperation.

During the meeting, Ambassador Selin conveyed that “Simon Ekpa has been hindering bilateral relations.” She further noted that “the cooperation between our two countries is going very well now, and the National Security Adviser has been providing all the evidence.” This statement underscores the ongoing legal proceedings and the evidence being shared between the two nations to ensure a fair trial.

President Tinubu expressed gratitude towards Finland for their intervention, stating, “I must thank you for your record on safeguarding human rights in our country with the trial of Simon Ekpa. Nigeria is indivisible. We have been through turbulent times, and we don’t want to promote terrorism.” He emphasized the importance of stability and cohesion, reflecting his administration’s stance against any actions that could lead to division among Nigerian citizens.

The Finnish Ambassador also praised President Tinubu for his courage in initiating economic reforms, acknowledging that while these reforms might be painful, they are essential for Nigeria’s progress. She highlighted ongoing reforms in the country and Finland’s support in areas such as energy, indicating a positive outlook for future collaborations.

This diplomatic engagement comes at a time when Nigeria is focused on both internal stability and enhancing its international relations. The trial of Simon Ekpa represents not only a legal matter but also a test of the diplomatic ties between Nigeria and Finland, with both countries, committed to upholding the rule of law while managing their bilateral relationships.

The discussions also included broader themes like the digitalization and automation of services in Nigeria, with President Tinubu seeking support from Finland, one of Nigeria’s key trading partners, to enhance these areas. The conversation between the leaders signifies a commitment to moving forward in various cooperative ventures despite the challenges posed by individual legal cases like Ekpa’s.

As the trial progresses, both nations are keen to ensure that justice is served in a manner that respects human rights and reinforces the integrity of their diplomatic relations. The exchange between Tinubu and Selin reflects a shared understanding of the importance of legal proceedings in shaping international cooperation and national security.
