Doyin Okupe, a former presidential aide, has passed away. Family sources report that Okupe died on Friday morning in Lagos at the age of 72, following a long struggle with cancer. Born on March 22, 1952, in Iperu, Ogun State, Okupe graduated with a medical degree from the University of Ibadan in Oyo State.

Okupe held significant roles in Nigerian politics, serving as special assistant on media and publicity to former President Olusegun Obasanjo and later as senior special assistant on public affairs to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan.

He also played a key role as the director-general of the Labour Party (LP) presidential campaign in 2023. Originally a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Okupe switched to the LP ahead of the 2023 general elections. However, he left the party in January 2024, roughly 10 months after the election.

In November 2024, Okupe announced he would no longer back Peter Obi, the LP’s candidate in the previous election.
